Meditations on Online Slots

I was playing slots in a Nevada casino. At my side sat a man from Michigan who was in love with Alison Stokke and needed to collect a quick fortune. He had a huge coin bucket which was almost empty.

He told me he usually preferred playing slots on the internet, but occasionally he got fed up with his little laptop and took his big Triumph America to a brick-and-mortar casino as far away as possible.

When he dropped his last coin in the slot and hit his much-needed megalomaniac jackpot, I stood up and drove my little Aston Martin home to my big flat-screen and sat down by the online slots machinery.

As the reels started turning, life slowed down. I played my favorite online slots, Hitman, and pulled down a few nice payouts. The session as a whole resulted in a zero win, more or less. Which is insubstantial.

A friend told me she prefers poker where you can apply your skill and actually have an edge – at least if you’re more skilled than the standard player. She’s got a point, of course, but she’s missing another one.

She probably doesn’t appreciate to its full right the freedom of not having to go through the constant deliberations required by a poker player. Be it as gratifying as it may; the hard-focused competition is tiring, and it doesn’t leave much room for meditation.

Serious poker players use meditation as a tool among others, but not while playing poker. That’s where online slots come in.

At least for this sub-standard poker player. The edge is always somewhere else!
