Now more than a year ago two major poker rooms, Ultimate Bet and Absolute Poker, got involved in one of the biggest online poker scandals the world has known. Yesterday night on CBS's 60 minutes the results of a four-month investigation were revealed...
X-Ray Vision
Tod Witeles, a former computer scientist who left his old job in order to play professional poker, played a key role in bringing this scam into the open. Tod became aware that he lost a great amount of money to one single player.
While certain poker players have developed superb "reading" abilities, this particular player seemed to possess almost psychic talents. This player made unbelievable calls and bets that would normally lead to an empty bankroll, yet in his case showed a gigantic profit.
Statistically Impossible
"It seemed like he was giving his money away. Except the only thing was, he wasn't losing. He was playing in a style that was sure to lose, but he was killing the game day after day.", Tod Witeless comments. Tod didn't trust it at all and began investigating this case in order to discover the true secret of this poker player.
Statistical analysis pointed out that such lucrative play could impossibly be the result of just a very good poker player. Computer security expert Michael Josem got hold of a large hand history file with which he figured out the exact odds of the player winning in the way he did. As Michael explains: "We did the mathematical analysis to find that they were winning at about 15 standard deviations above the mean…approximately equivalent to winning a one-in-a-million jackpot six consecutive times."
